Lebanon: Tear Gas Rains Down in New Round of Anti-Government Protests in Beirut
In what was another round of anti-government demonstrations, protesters clashed with Lebanese security forces in the country’s capital city Beirut on Saturday evening.
Footage shows protesters throwing projectiles at the police, who in response fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. Injured people can also be seen receiving medical assistance as others were being taken into custody by the security forces.
According to reports, demonstrators made their way through Beirut city centre and tried to storm the Parliament building before violence erupted.
Lebanon has been swept with protests over economic stagnation and corruption since October 2019. The trigger was a raft of new taxes, also targeting WhatsApp calls, designed to tackle the country’s high public debt.
