Lebanon: Police Fire Water Cannon, Protesters Hurl Tree Branches in Beirut
Dozens of people were reported wounded after police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters in downtown Beirut on Saturday.
Protesters were filmed near Martyrs’ Square throwing tree branches, stones and fireworks at police, who were guarding the entrance to a road leading to the parliament building.
The recent round of protests has been sparked by a delay in the formation of the new government.
Lebanon has been swept with protests over economic stagnation and corruption since October 2019. The trigger was a raft of new taxes, also targeting WhatsApp calls, designed to tackle the country’s high public debt.
